One thing I wasn’t prepared for about moving to Revelstoke is that small town thing where everyone knows everyone! I always thought Saskatoon was a pretty small place, and considered myself well connected within my industry. Revelstoke, however, is a whole new level. So far, this has only played to my benefit, as I run into friends on trails and, like in this case, receive project recommendations from various second-degree connections. I know some who grew up in rural communities can be quick to complain about small town gossip, but from my experience this well connected community has been nothing but positive.
Exhibit A. I made a friend, Megan, on an ACC Ski Touring day. Her roommate Mia works for her parents business which sells wallets to gift shops. They were in need of some lifestyle photos featuring their summer line and while talking with Megan, Mia was given my name. They also needed a young female model, but one with nice nails - ruling out all the climbers and mountain bikers in town! This led me to give my colleague Joelle a call. She was fresh on maternity leave, so hello pregnancy hormones that make nails look amazing. And just like that, we were set to go. On one hand, feeling connected in my new city has been challenging during the pandemic, but on the other, the small town nature of Revelstoke has worked hard to make up for it!
